Thailand
Recently back from Thailand, but still running around like a crazy person trying to work a bit and see people before school starts up again on Tuesday. As a result, this post is packed with pictures and captions, but not much else. Please forgive me, I'll say more about it later... the pictures are probably more interesting than my stories anyway. Happy New Year!
Bangkok's Chinatown district where we stayed...almost all of those signs are advertising jewelry stores selling only gold merchandise (another commonality in Chinatown was the number of restaurants that specialized in shark fin)
images from a Wat (a Thai temple)...these things have meaning beyond their beauty, but I can't remember what it is, so I'll wikipedia and edit the post later with more information
this Buddha is about 5meters tall and SOLID GOLD! at a time of invasion or threat of war sometime in Thai history it was covered in cement so that its value would remain a secret...once again, more info later
the intricate detail and astounding beauty of the mosaics and gold foil work that covered these temple buildings blew me away...double click on any picture to enlarge it
this reclining Buddha is 15meters long! ...one of the most amazing things that I saw at any of the temples in Bangkok
Bangkok's system of rivers and canals earned it the nickname "Venice of the East" and are still used today for transportation (there's a mass transit ferry system) with some floating markets also still in operation
one of my favorite places that we ate at, this little shop was packed full of locals and far off the beaten path for sightseers...we wandered inside and were welcomed at a table with people already enjoying their meals, communicated through sign language what we wanted to eat and drink, and enjoyed one of the best bowls of noodles that I've ever eaten--prepared at the cart outside the shop
at very different kind of restaurant, we ate our last meal in Thailand on gold-rimmed China...the food was amazing and we ate like royalty for barely $15 total (this isn't even all of the food)

...overall an amazing trip. I would recommend travel in Thailand to anyone, and promise to better organize my thoughts sometime next week.
